Join us for a comprehensive overview of principles in implementation and scale-up science. This session will describe the process, context and outcomes of systematic applications of implementation science research. Attendees will be introduced to important theories, models and frameworks that can support and guide implementation, scale-up and evaluation. Presenters will discuss specific strategies to support implementation in public health, health promotion and health care settings. 

This workshop is part of our VCHRI Research Training Series. This series is designed to support the acquisition of advanced skills, techniques and knowledge and lead to enhanced practices in the conduct of research.

Learning objectives 

In this workshop you will learn:

  • A brief introduction to implementation science and scale-up, and why they are important
  • Key terms and the differences between scale-up science and scale-up practice
  • Theories, models and frameworks that can support implementation and evaluation of interventions
  • Examples of implementation strategies that support implementation in public health, health promotion and health care settings
About the speakers
Dr. Lindsay Nettlefold is a senior researcher with the Active Aging Research Team at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Her research focuses on applying and evaluating principles of implementation and scale-up science within health-promoting interventions across various settings. Dr. Nettlefold is currently supporting implementation, scale-up and evaluation of Choose to Move — a health promotion program that supports older adults in B.C. to become more physically active and socially connected. She has a PhD from the Experimental Medicine Program at UBC where she evaluated the impact, implementation and provincial scale-up of Action Schools! BC. 
Dr. Heather McKay is a co-lead of the Active Aging Research Team and a professor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine. Her research evaluates the positive role of physical activity and other lifestyle factors on physical health, mobility and social connectedness in children and older adults. Through an implementation science lens, she evaluates scale-up of effective interventions to improve health on a population level. Her work has directly influenced government policy, and her team is among the few worldwide that have formally adapted, evaluated, enacted phased scale-up and sustained effective health promoting programs for children (Action Schools! BC) and older adults (Choose to Move) with community and government partners for more than eight years.
