Biography
Dr. Brian Kwon is an internationally recognized, award-winning surgeon-scientist with the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of British Columbia. He is the Canada Research Chair in Spinal Cord Injury (Tier 1) and holds the Dvorak Chair in Spine Trauma. As an attending spine surgeon at Vancouver General Hospital, his practice is focused on the management of adult spine trauma, spinal cord injuries and non-traumatic conditions such as spine infection, deformity and degeneration. As a principal investigator at the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD), he runs an active basic science and clinical research program in spinal cord injury.
Dr. Kwon has established himself as an international authority in spinal cord injury and spine trauma. His research has been recognized and supported by highly competitive funding agencies around the world, including most recently a $48 million grant from the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and a $24 million Transformation Grant from the New Frontiers in Research Fund. Dr. Kwon has authored more than 285 scientific research manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and has written over 35 textbook chapters.
