Biography
Dr. Sonia Yeung is an associate professor and head of the Cornea and External Disease program at the University of British Columbia (UBC), as well as the medical director for the Eye Bank of BC. Dr. Yeung completed her medical degree, doctorate and ophthalmology residency at UBC. After a fellowship in cornea, external diseases and refractive surgery at the University of Toronto, she returned to UBC for a clinician-scientist position in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. She is the current chair for the Technical Subcommittee on Ocular Tissues for the Canadian Standards Association, and co-chair for the Cataract for the Canadian Ophthalmological Society. Her research focus involves outcomes of cataract surgery in the setting of corneal disease and post-corneal transplantation, as well as the biology and management of ocular surface disease.
Dr. Yeung has received the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Gold Medal Award and Claes Dohlman Fellow Award from the Cornea Society (Harvard University) for excellence in research, and has published over 95 papers in peer-reviewed journals. In 2022, Dr. Yeung was the recipient for the UBC Distinguished Achievement Award for overall excellence in research, service and teaching. She is involved in teaching at the medical school, ophthalmology residency and cornea fellowship programs at UBC and has been the recipient of both the Faculty Research Award and Resident Teaching Award. Dr. Yeung regularly presents and moderates at national and international meetings. Her basic science laboratory is housed at the Eye Care Centre in Vancouver General Hospital, where she is also involved in the training of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
