Biography
Maylene Fong has over 28 years of nursing experience. She is currently a Manager at the Evergreen Community Health Center overseeing the Home Health Program, Primary Care and the Healthy Living Program. She has an interest in chronic disease prevention, self-management, and self-management support. Maylene has an interest in working with groups affected by the social determinants of health. She has worked with disadvantaged populations and their experiences managing their chronic conditions. As the manager of the Healthy Living Program she oversees the delivery of programs focused on the needs of disadvantaged populations with chronic conditions, including a Chinese Diabetes Education Centre and Community-based Pulmonary Rehabilitation Centre. The Healthy Living Program’s mission is to decrease the risk of chronic diseases in high risk population affected by the determinants of health. Maylene is the PI on a research project funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada BC. The aim of this project is to identify current awareness, feasibility and acceptability of using a prediabetes screening tool in practice and explore how a prediabetes prevention program could be tailored to meet the needs of two high risk populations, the Chinese and South Asian groups in Vancouver. This research project’s objective is to develop and implement a prediabetes prevention program in Chinese and Punjabi.
