Leadership update from VCHRI and BCCSU
We are pleased to announce that Dr. M-J Milloy has been appointed interim Director of Research at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use (BCCSU), effective to June 30, 2026.
Dr. Milloy is an associate professor in the Department of Medicine and a research scientist at the BCCSU. He has served as UBC’s inaugural Canopy Growth Professor of Cannabis Science since 2019. Dr. Milloy leads novel observational and experimental research into the health impacts of cannabis regulations and the possible therapeutic applications of cannabinoids, particularly for people living with substance use disorders or at risk of overdose.
As interim Director of Research, BCCSU, Dr. Milloy will develop and implement the Centre’s research strategy and cultivate a culture of research excellence, integrity and collaboration. He will promote equity, diversity and inclusion in the Centre’s research activities, including helping to advance the Faculty’s reconciliation efforts and working to honour the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples. Additionally, he will work to enhance the BCCSU’s national and international reputation through impactful research.
In this role, Dr. Milloy follows Dr. Thomas Kerr, whose outstanding leadership helped establish the BCCSU as a global leader in substance use research and harm reduction. Under Dr. Kerr’s guidance, the Centre achieved significant advancements in research and helped inform public health policy provincially and nationally. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kerr for his contributions and dedication.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Milloy on his new role and in thanking Dr. Kerr for his remarkable leadership and service at BCCSU.
Sincerely,
